80TPH European Type Grinding Mill for Barite Powder Production in Nigeria
Project Background
Niger Delta Minerals Ltd., a Nigerian mineral processing company, operates barite mining and processing facilities in Cross River State, Nigeria. With growing demand for high-grade barite powder from the oil and gas drilling industry in the Niger Delta, the company's CEO, Mr. Chukwuemeka Obi, decided to invest in a modern grinding system to upgrade barite powder fineness from the current 200-mesh product to 325-mesh and 400-mesh grades commanding premium prices. In late 2022, Mr. Obi searched Google for "barite grinding mill manufacturer" and found Xianglong Machinery's website, which featured a dedicated page on barite grinding applications with the European Type Grinding Mill. He also found XLM's listing on Alibaba International Station and submitted inquiries through both platforms.
Channel Communication and Needs Assessment
XLM's Africa sales engineer, Ms. Jenny Zhao, responded within 2 hours and arranged a WhatsApp consultation with Mr. Obi and XLM's grinding specialist, Mr. Henry Wu. The barite had a Mohs hardness of 3-3.5, a specific gravity of 4.2-4.4, and a feed size of approximately 25 mm after primary jaw crushing. The target output was 80 tonnes per hour of barite powder at 325-mesh and 400-mesh grades for sale to oilfield drilling fluid suppliers.
Technical Solution and Engineering Alignment
Henry recommended two sets of the European Type Grinding Mill (ETGM) -- one configured for 325-mesh and one for 400-mesh production. The ETGM's high-efficiency classifier, large grinding pressure, and low energy consumption per tonne of product made it the preferred choice over conventional Raymond Mills for fine barite grinding. The system also included a ZSW-380x96 Vibrating Feeder, a bag-filter dust collection system, and a finished product packaging and storage system.
Technical discussions proceeded over four weeks via WhatsApp and email. Henry provided a detailed grinding test report based on a barite sample shipped from Nigeria to XLM's test centre in China, confirming the ETGM's ability to achieve the target fineness specifications. He also provided a cost analysis demonstrating that the premium-grade powder pricing would deliver payback within 14 months. Critical infrastructure adaptations were engineered for Nigeria's challenging operating environment: a 400KW diesel generator set was specified as backup power (sized at 120% of total connected load to handle motor starting currents), soft-start drives were installed on all motors to reduce inrush current and minimize generator sizing, modular equipment design was adopted to accommodate weight restrictions on Nigerian roads (particularly the Lagos to Cross River State route), and tropical anti-corrosion treatment was applied throughout for the coastal humid environment. The contract was signed in January 2023, with a delivery period of 85 days.
Delivery, Installation, and Commissioning
Equipment was shipped from Qingdao to Lagos port and transported by road to the Cross River State site. XLM dispatched grinding engineer Mr. Henry Wu to Nigeria for a 16-day commissioning engagement. Both European Type Grinding Mills achieved their target fineness grades at the specified throughput during the acceptance tests.

Results and Client Feedback
Within two months of commissioning, Niger Delta Minerals had secured supply agreements with three oilfield services companies for premium-grade barite powder, at prices 35-45% higher than the previous 200-mesh product. Mr. Chukwuemeka Obi stated: "XLM's European Type Grinding Mill has transformed our business model. We are now producing high-value powder grades that our competitors cannot match with conventional mills. Henry Wu's technical support throughout the project -- from sample testing to commissioning -- was exceptional. We are planning to add a Ball Mill for coarse-grade barite and will source it from Xianglong Machinery."
